Super Smash Bros., known in Japan as Dairantō Sumasshu Burazāzu (大乱闘スマッシュブラザーズ, lit. Great Fray Smash Brothers) is a series of crossover figthing games created by Masahiro Sakurai and published by Nintendo, with characters from various franchises that try to knock each other off the screen.
The games are known for their game play, multiple playable characters, stages, and the chaos when fighting in four or eight player matches.
Super Smash Bros.
Super Smash Bros. is the first installment in the Smash Bros. series. It was released on January 21st, 1999 in Japan, April 26th, 1999 in North America, and on November 19th, 1999 in Europe.
The game was very different from other fighting games. Instead of draining a health bar, players would try to raise the others %. When the opponents % was high enough, they would fly much farther across the screen, and would be much easier to KO.
Super Smash Bros. features 12 playable characters from various Nintendo games, 8 of them being at the start of the game and 4 being unlockable. Each fighter has different unique movesets. However, there are two clone characters (Luigi and Jigglypuff) who take aspects from Mario and Kirby, respectively.
The game was met with positive reviews when the game was released. Critics loved the multiplayer gameplay and the charm the game had. Nowadays, many Smash fans consider it the weakest game in the series.
Super Smash Bros. Melee
Super Smash Bros. Melee is the second installment in the Super Smash Bros. Series. It was released on the Nintendo Gamecube on November 21st, 2001 in Japan, December 3rd, 2001 in North America, and in Europe on May 24th, 2002.
Melee added many new features to the Smash series. It added many new characters, such as Mewtwo, Zelda/Sheik, Pichu, Dr. Mario, Ganondorf, Falco, Bowser, and more. It also adds a new single player mode, Adventure Mode. Adventure Mode has the player running through iconic Nintendo levels, like the Mushroom Kingdom and a Zelda Dungeon. The final boss of this mode is Bowser. However, if the player meets certain requirements, the true final boss will appear, Giga Bowser. Melee also adds collectible trophies. Trophies can be found in the single player modes and the player can spend Smash coins on trophies.
Melee has a huge competitive scene. Melee has much faster gameplay than Super Smash Bros., making Melee very combo heavy game. Top players usually play top tier characters, such as Fox (who has a whole meme based on him, 20XX), Falco, Sheik, Jigglypuff, etc. It also has new techniques, like wavedashing, L-Cancelling (was in Super Smash Bros.), and DACUS. These techniques have made Melee a deep fighting game with a huge following that's still active to this day.
Many fans and and even Sakurai himself think Super Smash Bros. Melee is the best Smash Bros. game to date because of it's fast gameplay, mulitplayer, and single player.
Super Smash Bros. Brawl
Super Smash Bros. Brawl is the third game in the Smash series. It was released on the Nintendo Wii on January 31st, 2008 in Japan, March 9th, 2008 in North America, and June 27th, 2008 in Europe.
Brawl adds new characters, a different art style, and a new single player mode. The new characters include Lucas, Toon Link, Wolf, Wario, and more. Brawl is the first game to include 3rd party characters (Snake from Metal Gear and Sonic from Sonic the Hedgehog). Brawl took a realistic look on the characters, which was mixed from critics and fans. The main feature new feature of Brawl is the Subspace Emissary. The SSE has the player running through unique locations and defeating Nintendo enemies. It has cutscenes of the characters interacting with no voice clips.
Brawl was met with positive scores from critics, loving the new features that the game brought. However, fans were mixed on Brawl. A lot of people like the game, while others didn't. Many pro players prefer Melee over Brawl because of Melee's faster gameplay. Many pro players also think Meta Knight and the Ice Climbers ruin the game. Fans still debate over which game is better: Melee or Brawl.
Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U

Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U are the fourth and fifth installments. The Nintendo 3DS version released before the Wii U version of the game. Both versions have different modes and stages, but same playable characters. Both versions add new characters, new stages, and DLC fighters (Mewtwo, Lucas, Roy, Ryu, Cloud, Corrin, and Bayonetta). It also adds custom moves for the fighters (excluding the DLC fighters).
Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS
Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS is the first official handheld Smash Bros. game. It adds new characters (Villager, Mega Man, Pac-Man, Shulk, Palutena, etc.) and new stages (3D Land, Paper Mario, Dream Land, etc.)
The Nintendo 3DS adds a new mode, and changes the older ones. Classic Mode is mostly the same, but the player can choose between different paths. All-Star Mode is also mostly the same, but you fight the characters in the order of the characters first appearance (for example, you would fight Mario before Rosalina since Mario appeared in a game before Rosalina). The Nnitendo 3DS has an exclusive mode called Smash Run. In Smash Run, the player is set on an island in the sky. The player has five minutes to collect power-ups to raise the players stats.
The game is liked by the critics and fans, but many consider the Wii U version superior. The Nnitendo 3DS version has next to no competitive scene.
Super Smash Bros. for Wii U
Super Smash Bros. for Wii U is the latest installment in the franchise. It's mostly the same to it's Nintendo 3DS counterpart, but has different stages and changes the modes in past games slightly.
The Wii U version adds two new modes called Smash Tour and Master Orders/Crazy Orders. Smash Tour is a board game like mode. The player gets a number and moves around the board collecting power-ups and running into the other players. Master Orders/Crazy Orders is a mode were the player must defeat events in a certain amount of time before facing Master Hand/Crazy Hand.
Super Smash Bros. for Wii U was given high ratings from fans and critics. Many people praised the gameplay and characters, but were disappointed that there is no adventure/story mode.
When Super Smash Bros for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U were announced at E3 2013, almost every user on Miiverse was hyped. For months, users talked about the new game and what characters they had hoped to see. And the Smash Bros Community, which opened up after the announcement, soon became one of the most popular communities on Miiverse, and was known for it's off-topic users and memes.
