The Nintendo DS is a handheld gaming system released by Nintendo in late 2004. It is short for "Dual Screen" although it means "Digital System" or "Developers System". Likewise, the DS has 2 screens, something Nintendo hasn't done since the Game & Watch days. Many games take advantage of these dual screens. One screen even has a touch-pad.
This system is also the first Nintendo system to feature online capability, through Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection. Through this, you can play games with people around the world.
- As of May 20th, 2014, the Nintendo Wi-Fi Service has been discontinued. However, fans have created custom Online Servers to replace it.
The DS has many variations, including:
It can do everything the original DS could do. The only differences is that it is brighter and it weighs less.
This version was much different from the other variations. It is larger then the other 2, and has a menu with loads of apps, including a shop app where you can buy certain games.
In Early 2015, DS was announced to be compatible with the Wii U's Virtual Console System, meaning you can play DS Games on your Wii U by going to the Nintendo Eshop. The DS games that came to Wii U all received Miiverse communities as well.
For DS Virtual Console, you can change where the 2 DS Screens can go. You can have one screen on the gamepad the other on the TV, both screens on one, etc.
