amiibo are NFC figurines designed by Nintendo for wireless communication and to store game data. They are compatible with all Wii U and 3DS systems (however, an adapter will be required to transfer data to 3DS, 3DS XL and 2DS systems) The New Nintendo 3DS and New 3DS XL both have "system compability" with amiibos by simply placing the amiibo on the bottom screen of the system with an amiibo compatible game. amiibos are NFC figures, similar to those of the Skylanders, Disney Infinity, and LEGO Dimensions series. amiibo are the second line of toys to utilize the Wii U's NFC capabilities, the first being the Pokemon toys for Pokemon Rumble U.
Amiibo Group

The first wave of Amiibo.

The first wave of amiibo, 12 Super Smash Bros. fighters, were released in November 2014, alongside Super Smash Bros. for Wii U. The second wave of amiibo, 6 more Super Smash Bros. fighters, were released in December 2014. The third wave of Amiibo, 11 more Super Smash Bros. fighters, was in January and Febuary 2015. The fourth, fifth, and sixth wave of Amiibo, 15 more Smash fighters, is scheduled for May 29th, July, and September 2015.

Ever since their release, certain amiibos, like Marth, Wii Fit Trainer and Villager, have become unusually rare. Some defect amiibo, like a "Legless Peach", "Double-sword Marth, or "Dual-cannon Samus" have also sold for quite a lot of money on sites like eBay.

Nintendo has also made other series of amiibo such as Splatoon, Animal crossing, and Super Mario bros series. Amiibo cards for Animal Crossing and other Nintendo characters are also planned to be released.

Also Amiibo are not region locked so if you live in the US and get an Amiibo from Japan or Europe, then you're allowed to use it.
